Photography is a process for making and recording images. At The Photo, we are dedicated to the images themselves. After all, the images are the reason for having a camera.
There are two aspects to studying images. We want to improve our skills in making photos. Making is taking, processing and editing. And we want to deepen the understanding and pleasure we have when we look at images. In The Photo community, through sharing images and discussion, we believe we do both. Alfred Stieglitz argued that photography could be art. He brought traditional art analysis to the viewing of photographic images and so do we. It’s also true that photographic images can be made for many different purposes. Not all images have to be “art.” The purpose of an image should be considered. How has the image achieved its purpose? When we look at images, those we have made and those made by others, The Photo recognises that everyone brings something of their own experience to the table. In sharing our responses and considering how the image has created these different responses, we aim to build our visual literacy together..
